Traditional thinking considered something to be environmentally sustainable if it was made from recycled material or could be recycled. Now we have come to understand that an environmentally sustainable product is one that is produced, used and disposed of in ways that can lower the overall impact on the environment. When considering a product we need to take into account all of the stages of a product’s life:

- Product Design: does this product reduce consumption across its entire life?

- Raw Materials used: sustainability of materials used, carbon footprint etc.

- Manufacturing: Not only what is used but how the waste is disposed of.

- Transportation: not only shipping but include distribution and packaging.

- Use: does it help the consumer to use and waste less.

- Disposal: does this result in less trash and stuff going into the landfill.
