DIY: basic foam cutter (from Make: Volume 16)

Cut styrofoam and just about any low density foam with this homemade foam cutting machine. Project idea comes from Make: Volume 16.

NOTE: This DIY foam cutter is for cutting out whole shapes. If you don’t mind cutting through the edge of your piece of foam it can be used to cut foam for cases, but is not ideally suited for that purpose. If you have questions about foam cutting, post them here and Trader Dan will help you out.

What you’ll need

Base

Peg board

2×4

1/4” aluminum rod

Nichrome wire .010 diameter

Alligator clips/cable

Superglue

Screws

1 small nail

Bolt w/4 nuts

Power drill

1/16” drill bit

1/4” drill bit

Hacksaw

Safety glasses

Power source

Train transformer w/variable DC output

How to make it

Cut a square base of peg board

Cut two lengths of 2×4 to the width of your peg board (for base support ‘feet’

Mount peg board to 2×4’s with 4 screws

Drill a 1/4” hole in the center hole on one edge of the peg board with the 2×4 support ‘feet’

Bend aluminum rod in the middle at 90 degrees

Insert aluminum rod into the 1/4” hole (should fit snuggly)

Drill 1/16” hole through the 2×4 ‘foot’ AND the aluminum rod

Hammer in a small nail to the hole (adds stability)

Cut a groove in the top of the aluminum rod above center/center of the peg board base (will hold the nichrome wire)

Thread 4 nuts onto bolt (1
each end; 2
center)

Tie nichrome wire to center of bolt between the two nuts

Tighten nuts

Superglue end nuts to bolt (make sure all nuts are in the same position; level)

Thread nichrome wire through bottom of peg board base at the center/center hole (bolt with nuts will pull tight to bottom of base)

Run nichrome wire up and over the groove in aluminum rod

Tie/affix securely

Nichrome wire should be taut but not too tight

Attach cables with alligator clips to output of variable DC transformer

Attach 1 lead to the bolt (under the base)

Attach 1 to the aluminum rod

That’s it! You are ready to cut foam

Turn it on, give it a second and then use it to start cutting your foam.

From the description at Youtube:

Take used styrofoam and reuse it to make cool new things with this easy 5-Minute Foam Factory. Thanks to Bob Knetzger for the original project in Make: Volume 16.

Sharp business practices

In the Old Days a Sharp Business practice was one that bordered on or was fraud. Today I have noted an increase in these Sharp practices. 1. “Go Daddy”, “Norton” and many others have an automatic renewal set up. One has to jump through lots of hoops to cancel an account. It is made complex so the customer will make a mistake and the account will automatically renew. The account will automatically renew if you do nothing to stop it. So, if you are ill, lose your job or have some crisis that demands your attention you get to pay for a product or service that you do not want and cannot afford. 2. Magazines send out subscription renewal notices every 10 to 20 days. It is not when the subscription runs out, it is designed to get you to renew months in advance. They also make it as complex as possible to cancel. To cancel any product or service should be easy. It should only take an e-mail or phone call or letter. It is time for the public to get together and put a stop to this. Twitter, You-tube, face book, get this out into the inter net. I.D. the offenders and get this B.S. stopped.
Baddog

You do What With Your Traffic Cones???

So what do you do with your traffic cones?? Seems like a pretty easy to answer question!

Block traffic

Direct traffic

Barricade off areas

Leave behind your vehicle so people will see that you are stopped

Make jewelry, belts and earrings

Did you say jewelry, belts and earrings??? I did indeed!!

You have got to check out http://www.hazardline.com. Nick is creating unusual accessories using, yes traffic cones! Obviously the cones we sell are not sold with this intent, but I have to admit I like the outcome! And we thank Nick for his business and imaginative interpretation of Traffic Cones. He even has a Project Green which utilizes a very cool grass design, and 30% of the proceeds of the sales on those items go to the scheduled ecological projects.

It is great to see someone thinking out of the box! Best of luck Nick and keep up the good work!

Just a quick hello from Give a Sandwich

Just wanted to say hi to everyone here on Cotradeco. Give a Sandwich would also like to issue an apology to all those who suffer from arachibutyrophobia. I understand that this is a serious affliction and I don’t want to appear insensitive to the matter. A phobia is defined as an irrational fear. In this case it seems to me to be a bit of a misnomer. Peanut butter is not the safest of substances. With most other foods, biting off more than you can chew is not all that big of a deal. Worst case; you will need to discreetly expel the excess edibles from your mouth. Problem solved. With peanut butter however, this is just not the case. Petering out in the middle of a mouthful of gooey peanut butter is a bit like discovering that the lake you just swam half way across is twice as wide as the distance that you are able to swim. Don’t panic, stay calm, assess the situation, I said don’t panic, do not panic, oh my god what are you going to do! Lest we forget, the great Mama Cass Eliot’s death was, in fact, not sandwich related. On the topic of rock and roll deaths, I am convinced that the facts in the life and the death of the King remain, to this day, concealed from public eyes. King of Rock n’ Roll, he should have been known as the king of living on the edge. Peanut butter and banana, come on people, this was obviously a cry for help. A sweet and delicious cry for help. Swallowing this combination is nearly an impossible feat. He is known, in the sandwich community, as a bit of an Evel Knievel. Don’t get me wrong, we do appreciate his contribution to the world of music, but he was known to complete as many as 15 PB&B sandwiches in one sitting. WOW! That’s got to be like jumping 12 Grand Canyon’s all lined up side by side. I’ll need to check my Sandwich to canyon conversion chart later. With all of this in mind, Give a Sandwich continues to stand by the claims that peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are amazing, and could be a catalyst for great social change. Happy day.
