I wasn’t really sure what to write for my first post here on CoTradeCo. I felt it was my duty as a UK Employee to have (at least my first) post relate somewhat to the company, but I also wanted to give everyone here a little bit of a better idea of who I am. Fortunately, I was presented with the perfect topic last night, when I was least expecting it, at the gym.
Unlike those who seem to be able to magically shut-off, and run endlessly on the treadmill/elliptical trainer while staring into space, I seem to get bored after about 15 seconds. Lately I have been combating this by watching episodes of Dexter on my I-Pod. The show came highly recommended by my dad who shares the same television/movie tastes, and preference for black humor that I do so I went ahead and downloaded the episodes so I could watch them at my leisure. Anyway, I just finished the first season, and was on to the first episode of Season 2. I was only half paying attention to a scene which featured scuba divers when my eyes caught something on the tiny I-Pod screen. “They’re using a UK light!” I shouted aloud and to no one in particular (I am sure generating some strange looks). Of course it wasn’t until I got home later that I was able to freeze frame on the shot and really see what kind of light they were using and make sure it was a UK.
It was our D8 Xenon, which would make perfect sense in this scene, since the divers were supposed to be pretty deep and the D8 is waterproof to 500 feet. Not to brag, but it also makes sense that the divers would be using a UK light in the first place, since UK Dive lights make up 75% of the world’s dive lights.
Anyway, all my company pride aside, it was pretty cool to see the light on one of my new favorite shows, even if it was in a scene in which unsuspecting divers come upon a dead body (such is the nature of Dexter). I was wondering, are there any other fans of the show on here? Any one that can recommend another show I can get addicted to once I am done with Dexter to beat treadmill boredom?

PS: And yes, I realize my first UKCASELADY post wasn’t about Cases…

Oh and I created a new category under Sports and Leisure, “TV and Movies,” and moved your post. While you are mentioning UK cases I don’t think this qualifies as a Shameless promotion. WE consider shameless promotions to be blatant advertisements like you would find in classifieds or, well, an actual AD.
We all know you are a rep for UK here at CoTradeCo, so it doesn’t seem a stretch that Underwater Kinetics will come up in conversation.
Hopefully in the next few iterations of the design and development cycle the community blog will be better grouped, categorized, and filterable to eliminate any worry about “gray” area promotional stuff.
If you or anyone else has thoughts on how we can improve the communities, communities we should add, or blog topics that should be here just let us know in the CoTradeCo news, comments, and requests topic in the Potluck community
Take care everybody.
I think one of the things that intrigued me most when I got into Dexter was how the show was going to manage to have the character grow over the course of a season. I mean for most season long dramas, the characters change, learn, etc from episode to episode (like Tony Soprano, Vic Mackey, Buffy to name a few of the main characters from some of my favorite hour-longs). In Dexter, since the whole show is based around the idea that he is a person without feelings and incapable of growth, I was really curious to see whether the show could get past “murder of the week” type structure to have some over-arching themes and character developments. How could there be any sort of character-based crisis for someone whose whole problem is he is so disaffected? Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised by how the show handled everything and (no spoilers) how the 1st season ended :)
As for the CBS stuff, they attempted to air Dexter during the writer’s strike to fill airspace, but I am pretty sure it didn’t really pan out since I haven’t heard about it since. It was my understanding they didn’t really have to edit the violence as much as they did “adult content” which is has interesting connotations for American Culture on the whole… You can read an article about the editing here.

Dexter is amazing. Absolutely in my favorites list (which is getting long). People I know seem somewhat split on the content and plot. Also a fan of black comedy, I found it refreshing (in a morose sort of way) to have an anti-hero “cop show”. Disturbing and fascinating at the same time.
I particularly appreciate how the writers have managed to explain how Dexter became the way he is on a psychological level without actually justifying his actions. As a big fan of brain disorders and sociological studies (sounds scary :) I really enjoy stories that delve into the depths of human behavior and the inner workings of the human mind. In this case Dexter delves mentally and literally under the sea (lame attempt at a punny).
What do you think, or have you heard anymore about them moving the show to ABC and taking it off Showtime? I thought this was the worst idea ever? And don’t laugh if I’m out of the loop and the next season is already done and it WAS on ABC (I don’t actually have television, and tend to watch recommended shows on DVD or online once whole seasons are complete).
But really, while the Dexter is, in my mind tastefully presented considering the premise, I just think adding the restrictions of broadcast television to the show will take away some of the quality, style, and earnest story telling.
Anybody else?
PS: And that is cool about the Underwater Kinetics light. I never noticed that before either. I was just way more excited about finding a fan of Dexter. But now I think I have revealed far too much about my personality ;)
