Stacy posted a sunset from a Kumeyaay Solstice Observatory at Cowles Mountain in San Diego. When I saw her post, it reminded me of my trip to the Yucatan.
The picture is the observatory at Chichen Itza.
While all the sites I visited in the Yucatan were amazing, and all make the Mayan interest with the sun and the stars obvious, the observatory at Chichen Itza is truly a marvel. South of the Castillo is a strange round building known as the Carocal. Several of its windows point towards the equinox sunset and the southernmost and northernmost points on the horizon where Venus rises.
Though, even while I marvel at the observatory, I have got to post a picture of the ‘snake on the pyramid’. See the next post.
