Welp, we have had a very relaxing three day stay in Half Moon Bay. We camped at the State Beach last night and managed to catch up on any hot showers we may have missed along the way, and then some. We sat under the gloriously hot water three stages past pruney.
Today was laundry day. After leaving the campsite we were directed to what happens to be the last laundry-mat in town, Kelly Street Laundry. I have never seen such an ‘upscale’ washeteria in my life and I was quite tickled by it, until I discovered the prices, that is.
While we were there washing, one of the machines failed and caused us to pump another $4.50 into rewashing our comforter which didn’t rinse properly the first go around. Just as we begrudgingly coughed up the dough, the owner happened to walk in. He was a serious and professional looking fellow and he had the gait of one who tries hard to hide a pair of bowed legs. We notified him of the faulty washer and he asked us to write our name and address down so his wife could mail us a refund. We unabashedly exclaimed that we do not have an address, that we are wandering on the road and just passing through. He sat down close next to us on the bench we were perched on and discreetly handed us the $4.50, stating that he doesn’t issue refunds in this manner for fear of everyone looking for a free wash. We understood, and thanked him. He took a few moments to regale his times spent traveling the country for 3 months in a VW Bus, during his younger years. (This is becoming a very popular theme which we will be addressing soon on our blog). And before he set out for the day he offered us four free boxes of Tide laundry detergent, stating that “this is for the next time you stop somewhere new to do your wash”. Neat-O.
Hi Kristen,
Thank you for your comments , it is exciting to learn that someone is keeping up with our travels!
We are going to be heading to Oregon, yes, and Washington…but I must say I am entirely intrigued by your mention of vortex sites?! I haven’t heard of this, but please, do tell! Sounds like a place we want to visit!
I just had a feeling you may want to add this little nugget to your journey..
The website is: www.oregonvortex.com – it gives the true details, but here is a little blurb off the site:
The Oregon Vortex is a glimpse of a strange world where the improbable is the commonplace and everyday physical facts are reversed. It is an area of naturally occurring visual and perceptual phenomena, which can be captured on film. No matter your education or profession you will find a challenge to all your accepted theories.
A vortex, essentially a whirlpool of force, is the basic form of our universe. From our galaxy, whose vortex form we see as the countless suns of the Milky Way, throughout the gravitational vortex of our solar system, down to the vortex of an atom, the vortex form recurs throughout our world structure. The Phenomena that gives The Oregon Vortex its name are evident throughout the entire area. Nowhere in the circle do you normally stand erect. Inevitably the visitor assumes a posture that inclines toward magnetic north. The corona of The Vortex, as well as the minor vortices, discovered during the continuous study of The Vortex, are among the unique phenomena to be observed here.
Hey that vortex looks just like the Mystery Spot in Santa Cruz! In fact I was just about to ask if the Mystery Spot was one of the vortexes you spoke of Kristen when I got a phone call and then had to run out the door. Now I come back to find the mystery revealed, and SHOCKED that the picture of the house on the hill is nearly identical.
Coincidence? Duh-duh-DAAAAA! I don’t think so. But I’ll leave you to discover the powerful forces at work yourself!
I’m sure you are north of there by now Happy Camper Bus but you should turn around immediately and get to the Mystery Spot (and if you do, be sure to goto Pizza My Heart in Santa Cruz as well and try the pesto or clam and garlic slices, mmmm).
Thank you for the link to your blog. You guys seem to be having a grand time. I suspect that you will be traveling north via 101? That way you get to see all of the beautiful redwoods and the northern California coast line. There are so many cool things to see along the way.
Kristen, you are the bomb-diggity! We are so there, thank you for the information! It is hard to say at this point what are timeframe is on getting there but I will make sure to keep you posted, I am so excited!
Zoe, I wish we were still in Santa Cruz , I regret not visiting your spots, but it has already become a loved spot of ours and we will visit again for sure, perhaps timing will allow us to take a jaunt there together! Oh, and I can hear the enthusiasm in your descriptors, we are excited to continue North, but I already can’t wait to go back.
Skyler! I am so glad you found me here! I am going to count on you heavily to pass on some wonderful spots to visit whence we head up to Eureka! I’ll be in touch soon! Big hugs!

It’s nice to see that he did the right thing for you, citing of course, memories of yesteryear. I enjoy reading of your journey, and look forward to reading of your next adventure. Are you heading up north, and by north I mean, towards Oregon? Have you visited any of the vortex sites yet? I find that to be very interesting…
