Southern California has had lots of rain and cold temps followed by warm temps. This fall sould be a banner year for termites. I understand that the Hawaiian island are having an epidemic. Do not use oil based termite killing products. Do not waste your time with spray and stuff that you put on top of the wood. From my experience these do not work or are bad for you and your environment. Orange oil works! I tried it and it realy does the job. It is organic and smells nice. You can buy it from Amazon so you can do it yourself, no need to pay a pest control company. To use orange oil you will need a glass
syringe and #18 guage needle. They can be used over and over. Glass syringes and #18 guage needle can be purchased over the inter net. Here is how to do it:
Carefully fill the syringe with about 5 cc’s of orange oil and attach the needle. Find the hole in the wood where the termites are pushing out their waste. Gently push the needle into the hole and inject the orange oil. The orange oil will travel thru the grain of the wood and kill the termites.
Great alternative to the expensive firms that want to tent your house. Living near the beach guarantees termites who seem to pick the warm days to swarm. I’m going to try this. Thanks Dave.
Where can I find more info on this?
I am curious how to find the termites. Do you always see the tell-tale signs of termites eating at the wood? Well basically any more tips and advice would be helpful as I think I might have a problem.
Milo: Look for piles of termite”poop”
it looks like sawdust. Termites follow the grain of the wood and occasionaly make a hole to push out their waste. When you find this pile look for the pencil sized black hole, it may be pluged with waste. One way is to place a flash light in the pile and point it up. The flash light beam should fall on the hole.
Orange oil is very flammable. Be carefull with it. One cannot use plastic syringes to deliver it.Orange oil will eat plastic.
I wonder if orange oil could be used a a bio fuel?
More on orange oil. I had mice in my garage. I tried traps, glue traps and poison baits with no luck. I soaked a couple of small rags with orange oil and put them up in the rafters. After 2 days no more mice. What else can one use orange oil for?
Not sure what you can use it for but I would not advise giving it to the neighbors cat (even tho you hate old Fluffy). A friend of mines cat drank some gasoline that I had in a can one time; he then ran around in circles for an hour and then dropped to the ground. I thought he was dead but it turned out the he’d just run out of gas.
