Negative Ions for Positive Health

Negative Ions for Positive Health

I was at a customers office the other day visiting and one thing really stood out and that was the energy around the entire office. It was positive and up beat. This peaked my interest and I had to ask how he created such a positive environment with business so bad.

Bill was on vacation in Italy and he kept seeing these large chucks of salt and salt lamps displayed at businesses. Through questions and research Bill found out that the negatively charged ions are created by heating the lamp. This process pulls water molecules from the air to it’s surface, salt is added which neutralizes positive ions (pollution) and neutralized molecules are released back into the environment. These negative ions help clean and purify the the air. In nature this process happens by thunderstorms, the oceans and waterfalls. Bill found through his research that negative ions: strengthen immune system, improve well being, improve metabolism and increase mental clarity and alertness.

Bill has created a healthier work environment and in the process he has educated his employees and they are all benefiting from this new positive energy… He doesn’t know if it is the salt crystal’s or having something to believe in but through this down economy and lay offs but his business is strong and employees energy and outlook is positive.

Do they come in extra large? I could use a big pick me up! :)

Seriously though studies have been done exploring the health benefits of negative ions. The evidence began appearing in the 1970s when researchers measured metabolic changes in mice and rats in reaction to ion charge. From the article The Positive Health Benefits of Negative Ions at NutritionReview.org:

When exposed to positive ions (which accumulate in the atmosphere at the beginning of a storm) researchers routinely noted that animals became agitated, aggressive and were more prone to respiratory illness. Furthermore, when mice were infected with influenza virus and housed in an environment depleted of all ions, death rates increased, indicating a previously unknown benefit on overall health.

In 1997 German scientists creating special chambers to contain to remove all negative ions. The exposed animals had an increased death rate. British scientists in similar experiments to measure stress levels and exercise found that negative ions ‘significantly improve all physiological states, particularly during rest’ (see the previously cited article).

Unfortunately when it comes to salt lamps abilities to produce negative ions the jury is out. It seems that no one in the scientific community is interested (or motivated $$$) enough to do the research. However, the people out there claiming the health benefits of salt lamps goes on and on.

I defer to the owner of SaltLampCreations.com and his blog, Do Salt Lamps Work?

”...I claim only that Salt Lamps are beautiful and make great gifts for any occasion. If customers find some health benefit, whether it is a result of a “placebo effect” or an actual increased sense of wellness associated with the Salt Lamp, it is not something that I do not encourage. I only share their comments on the Testimonial pages.”

Whether it is real or not seems irrelevant. Believing it so tends to be more important for mental health. And I am now a believer who is going to go get a salt lamp (and maybe dig out my ionizing air filter just to be safe).

I use a salt lamp and though I purchased it for it’s aesthetic, I would be inclined to say I feel better since adding it to my home.

Y’all are bunch of hippies. Oh shoot, I guess I can’t talk now that we use all them low wattage light bulbs and now Bobbie has me looking at LED lighting systems for the house. Sign me up for some metaphysical arty looking salt lamps.
