Halloween, Do you believe?

I believe that some geographical locations have for lack of a better term have “bad juju” A place having such a pervasive feeling of pure evil that the very atmosphere is saturated with bad feeling.
Look at the photo it would seem to be a patch of ordinary desert. As I walked closer to the tree, a feeling of dread came over me. My heart rate increased,my breathing became deeper and faster and the hair on the the back of my neck litterally stood on end. I tried to reason the feeling away but the closer I got to that tree the stronger the feeling of terror got. The feeling of panic would not go away, I could not force my self to stay near the tree. After I moved where the photo was taken the terror subsided. Several times I approached the tree and each time the feeling of intense dread was there.
I have never been to this location before nor has anyone I know. This spot is 25 miles from the closest water and 30 from a paved road. It is about 4 miles from any trail. I took the time to carefully look around with the aide of 10×50 bicculars there was absolutelty no one else around. I have no idea of this locations history. I have experienced this phenomenon only twice before at different locations. Do you care to offer any opinions?

Intriguing tale….

I have experienced both dreadful feeling places and good energy feeling places AND people. On two occasions over the course of my life time where I have passed by a complete stranger and felt the intense terror you describe. It’s awful.

Where is this place Dave?

It is around the 5000 foot level near Mt.Inyo. Mt.Inyo is between the Owens valley and Death Valley. One can only get there on foot and off trail.
People producing terror I understand. There is no animal more dangerous nor unpredictable. I do not understand places producing terror. Radio activity?, noxious gasses?, magnetic fields? I keep looking for a scientific explanation.

This has happened to me before, in the outdoors here in Washington. The place is called the Indian Heavens, I was so frightened I backed away from the place I was standing. I assure you, there was NO ONE anywhere near where I was hiking…

I tend to lean towards some scientific or neural/biological answer myself. I want to believe that are mysterious forces in the universe that we do not understand, but even if they are true they tend to be scientifically explainable at some point anyway. Or maybe you were just feeling something, what did you eat, drink, or smoke before that hike ;)

Of course it could be brief flashes of insanity and mental instability! I too have experienced similar phenomena but knowing how fragile the human mental condition can be I often wonder if much of these experiences can truly be explained simply from our biological processes.

Anyway, thanks to the twilight zone and the human penchant for scaring ourselves and story telling, it is far more exciting to think that something is going on there, whether it really is or not.
