USGS, earthquakes, and being prepared

Check out the www.USGS.gov/Earthquake center. See how many quakes happen in California.

Buy yourself a emergency preperdness kit now.

If your Child lives in a College Dorm and the lights go out a Pelican PCB Mitylite LED photoluminescent light would be very helpful.

If you have or know Older folks a light that can be found in the dark is nice.

From experience a black flashlight is difficult to find in a blackout.

Hey, I assume you have an earthquake, or general preparedness kit. I was planning on posting some emergency preparedness checklists and related info. Could you share some of the stuff you keep at home, in your car, at the office, etc…? It might help me build those resources.

I am going to just talk off the top of my head. Assume that an earthquake will be very large and become a survival situation. You will be on your own for 5 to 10 days, no electricity, water, medical help or communications. I would go with the old rule of “threes”. Depending upon the weather one can survive for 3 hours with out shelter, 3 days with out water and 3 months with out food. All of one’survival equipment should be portable so you can easly pack it up and go. All gear in the car should be in back packs in case you have to walk.
I will make a list of the suff I feel one should have. This is for a family of 4 persons.
1. A free standing 3 season tent for home and the same for each of the 2 cars.
2.4 sleeping bags for home.
3.4 thermo-lite bivy sacks and 8 Emergency reflective blankets. one set in each car.
4.2 water proof tarps for home. 2 in each car.
5. WATER as much as you can store at home and in each of your cars. Store it in small containers. If all of your water is in one large container and it gets spoiled, you are out of luck.
6. For food I keep mres. They take up little space, do not require water, have a 5 year shelf life. They can be heated by normal methoids or even putting on a rock in the sun. Look at www.longlifefood.com for mres (mititary food rations ready to eat)
7. water and wind proof matches and magnesium fire starters. for hjome and cars.
Well, there are more things that would be a great help. But It is 1917 hours now and I have been up since o5oo. So, more will follow later

After an earthquake there will be a lot of dogs loose. A lot of those dogs will be dangerous. Get yourself Bear spray (pepper spray).

Hey Dave I’m not ignoring your post here, I’m just bouncing between so many things I haven’t had a chance to get together with you about some of the things I’ve mentioned to you in this post and other communications. I really appreciate the info and we will put it all to even more good use soon. Keep the thoughts coming and find your day well!
