Consumer Reports writes about the pros and cons of LED Christmas tree lighting. In summary:
• Not surprisingly, LEDs womp all over incandescents for power saving, using ~3-33% less power, saving you up to $10 bucks every 300 hours.
• Not surprisingly, LEDs won the durability test, failing to burn out over 4,000 hours, with standards burning one or two out per strand before half that time.
• LEDs were not brighter, but ran cooler—Did you know 14 people a year are killed as a result of Christmas tree fires?
• Surprisingly, LEDs and incandescents tied for initial price, at about an average of 7 bulbs per buck.
No word on the pros and cons of candles vs LEDs in menorahs. What are your experiences? And know any sources for reliable LED tree lights?
Ok, so now is the time to get that ability to post a picture in a response. I have the winning Halloween photo, hands down. I bet Trader Dan has seen it before, it’s made a few rounds. Let’s just say, the people that made my costume DO NOT work for any production company. A pillowcase DOES NOT constitute a ghost!
Well save that Halloween pic for just a day or two more! There will be a whole special community blog topic in the Home & Family community
When you see this zoe: get that contest posted!
Can’t wait to see your pic Kristen.
Kristien, thanks for the info. Trader Dan let me know if you find good deals on LED lights. I seem to be buying new lights every year because one light goes out and the balance of the strand go out. They must make the lights so they short out after one or two uses. Hopefully the LED lights are a little more durable in that sense as well as the burn time.
What about this Halloween Contest, it’s almost October??
I’m working on it (the Halloween contest). I’m sorry, but my other obligations have been slightly more than I thought (at least so quickly). Monday afternoon, the contest will begin!
Yeah LED’s just make sense for Christmas lights in everyway. As some of you know I work in theater as well, and you can even expect professional lighting instruments used in theaters and rock shows to be switching soon.

Shoot it’s never too early to talk Christmas. It’s Christmas all year long here at the trading post!
All kidding aside, we are so busy we’ll be waiting until after Thanksgiving to start putting up Christmas decorations this year! More old fashioned that way anyway.
(Though I’m not saying we’re not planning already ;)
I just thought all christmas lights were LED by now. Though that’s interesting and sad that anybody dies over a Christmas tree.
Not sure where the best deal is on LED holiday decorations, but I might bend some of our suppliers and customers ears to see if it will help folks out.
For now I’m just waitin’ on zoe to get the Halloween contest posted (we’re giving away a bunch of blinky pelican lights to folks who post pictures of previous halloween costumes or adventures).
Can’t wait to hear what other folks are doing for Halloween, Thanksgiving, AND Christmas though!
