Today, Sunday October 12, 2008, I awoke and with a quick glance out the patio door could see that Melissa, as I have now named the Monarch caterpillar, was beginning to pupate! She has attached herself to an Aloe vera plant right next to the milkweed. If you were wondering, the milkweed still has leaves to continue growing! I am so pleased that “she” picked a spot so visible to me. Apparently it is impossible to tell a male monarch caterpillar from a female unless you dissect it, so the naming may have been a bit premature. After the butterfly emerges though, the male is identified by two black spots on the hind wings which are absent on the female.
I still have not found where the other little guy crawled off to, but hopefully like Madame Butterfly says, he is well into the transformation process and will grace us with his presence shortly.
Hey, Happy Campers! Shall I find a way to send you some milkweed for your monarchs to lay their eggs?
The mask will be ready in time for Vegas, which I will definitely be heading towards somehow at the end of this month. Whether by car, bus, foot, trampoline or the remote possibility of by camel, I will get to Vegas for the Halloween festivities. The mask will exceed any of your fantasmical expectations AND be made of paper. There will be pictures posted of the creation process, as well as of the finished mind bending, face altering finished product.
Is New Mexico a solo trip for you or am I also invited?
Greetings Earth travelers!
What a great looking place for an awesome deal! Your choice on deleting the mauve of the fireplaces is exceptional taste in my opinion!
Is Santa Fe anywhere near White Sands National Monument?
Best of wishes!
Yes, I would agree with you that we need ”...to look at the root causes of these types of social and natural atrocities …” and it does make for some interesting thought processes, but the reason the “activists” activate is because finding an ultimate cause is unlikely, and in my opinion, even if it were found, would point toward the need for individuals to adjust their values towards the appreciation of diversity, compassion and joy, with a dash of curiosity thrown in for good measure. The only way these sorts of things can be happening is if people are basing their actions on the fear of the unknown, greed and self-centeredness.
Since I have no control over the inner values of those who make these decisions, I must if I am to remain sane, work with as much joy as is possible in the face of such adversity to create a less atrocious
world.
So, while I agree with you that a search is worthwhile, it is important
to not get caught up in so many thoughts and ACT with dignity and humanity when the need arises and the implications of not doing so are clear. The only way to do this is by fighting “one injustice at a time.”
After all, it is one atrocity that is created at a time.
That said it is with great disgust at the finding of yet another story along these lines, but with great admiration for the people working to create an alternate reality, that I present to you, The Alto Parana Association of Agriculturists.
Endosulfan is one of the pesticides threatening their efforts to retain their life as independent organic farmers.
Here’s something you might not have thought about in regards to water:
"As recently reported in Grist,
Nuclear plants in the southeastern U.S. may be forced to cut power production or temporarily shut down later this year because the year-long drought has left too little water to cool the reactors.”
Hope they shut ‘em down before they run out.

After seeing the demise of the basil, seemingly faster than Santa on Christmas eve, I really didn’t have much hope for the oregano. As for the apples, whisper to them daily, “Red is the color of passion and you are the fiery incarnation of applesauce!” Believe me, They will grow!
