According to the industry professionals the packaging industry is going green.
From International Paper to Proctol and Gamble, companies are rethinking the old ways and looking into the new, redesigning packaging to make it more environmentally friendly and minimizing the amount of materials required. By embracing recycled and renewable content in packages and minimizing materials companies lessen the impact of not only the goods, but of transporting them as well.
The Grocery Manufacturers Association conducted a survey and found that environmental issues aren’t a passing fad. A co-author of the study, Peter Capzucca with Deloitte Consulting LLP said, “It is unlike any business issue consumer businesses have encountered in the past. The industry’s large environmental footprint and unique dependencies on agricultural inputs, water and packaging make sustainability a critical strategic issue that consumer packaged-goods companies must address proactively.”
Mark matthews of xpedx was able to save one of their electronics clients around $30 million in 12 months just by reducing the size of their boxes.
“Sustainability is part of every packaging engagement today,’’ said Jerry Kathman, president of LPK Inc., the Cincinnati brand-identity and package-design firm. “Everybody’s interested in redesigning their packaging to make it smaller, including more recycled content or using more environmentally friendly inks.”
Even with all the coporate hub-bub surrounding sustainable packaging, the customer is the one who will make the final decision. It’s the customer who is choosing products that are green.

A business is sustainable if it has adapted its practices for the use of renewable resources and holds itself accountable for the environmental and human rights impacts of its activities. This includes businesses that may want to operate in a socially responsible manner, as well as to protect the environment. Many profit-oriented corporations will forge an image of social responsibility through various marketing and public relations techniques, although this apparent image does not necessarily mean that they are sustainable.
