Local San Diego county Earth Hour action group

Starry Night is a local San Diego group created by Tammy Bowser to help promote Earth Hour and hopefully have an hour when we can see the stars in the city while promoting public awareness of environmental, global warming, and energy conservation issues.

Tammy originally thought of having a “Starry Night” event several years ago but never did anything with the idea. However, once discovering Earth Hour and their awareness campaign for energy conservation and global warming, Tammy stepped into action. She handed out flyers, sent emails, and made phone calls.

Unfortunately there wasn’t enough time before the 2008 event to coordinate the type of activities that she wanted. So the starrynightsd.org site was put on hold and she funneled all of her energies into simply supporting Earth Hour.

What’s next for 2009?

In the coming months we will be getting this site active (on it’s own domain) utilizing the community blog and networking tools of CoTradeCo to help raise awareness of Earth Hour and get the local municipalities and business groups involved.

Our goal for 2009 is to get all the municipalities in San Diego county and as many businesses and individuals involved as possible. We will also be helping to coordinate local group meetups for neighborhoods and different areas to hopefully create many localized and community based events as possible. But we might also try to create a central San Diego event somewhere outside the city on higher ground where we can all gather to watch the lights go out around the county and have an edge on seeing some stars for that hour.

The community for starrynightsd.org will be an extension of the Green Life community here at CoTradeco. So you can sign up for a SPOT at CoTradeCo and start posting your support and ideas to the Green Life Starry Sky / Earth Hour blog topic.

Check back at starrynightsd.org soon, or contact Tammy through CoTradeCo (link at the top of the page) to learn more about how you can get involved.

Thanks for visiting, and as they say, excuse our mess, this site is under construction :)

With your help maybe we can make San Diego a little less bright for an hour next year!
Normally we like to bring light in the world, but this is a worthwhile exception :)

Special thanks to John at CityBeat and everyone who participated in 2008

It was a great honor to be contacted by John at CityBeat asking about our involvement with Earth Hour. He first found us through our registration listings at Earth Hour as participating companies (for CoTradeCo and imotion design). Which made us feel a little guilty since we are small companies whose participation had little direct impact on San Diego participation. But thanks to Tammy making us all aware and contacting everyone she could think of, there seems to be interest from San Diego residents for the Earth Hour event. And after John contacted us, we realized we simply had to move forward to be ready for 2009.

There are other people we would like to thank for answering questions and passing the word in those hectic two weeks leading up to Earth Hour 2008, and we will be posting those thanks you’s and links to their sites as we compile that information.

Questions? Comments? Contact us!

We don’t have our own online email form working yet, but you can send email using the CoTradeCo contact link at the top of this page.

Or feel free to call us!

What is Earth Hour?

Created to take a stand against the greatest threat our planet has ever faced, Earth Hour uses the simple action of turning off the lights for one hour to deliver a powerful message about the need for action on global warming.

Earth Hour brief history

On March 31 2007, for one hour, Sydney made a powerful statement about the greatest contributor to global warming – coal-fired electricity – by turning off its lights. Over 2.2 million Sydney residents and over 2,100 businesses switched off, leading to a 10.2% energy reduction across the city. What began as one city taking a stand against global warming caught the attention of the world.

In 2008, 24 global cities participated in Earth Hour at 8pm on March 29. Earth Hour is the highlight of a major campaign to encourage businesses, communities and individuals to take the simple steps needed to cut their emissions on an ongoing basis. It is about simple changes that will collectively make a difference – from businesses turning off their lights when their offices are empty, to households turning off appliances rather than leaving them on standby.
